{REVIEW} KURO-Bō – an Eco-Friendly 100% natural way to filter water.

There has been much speculation about the quality of the water in Cape Town given that our dams are at an all time low. The quality of the water is in question and I am not sure wether or not that is a fact, but one can’t be too careful.

We have been drinking purified water for years in our household. Of course we have the odd glass of tap water here and there but filtered fridge water is definitely our preference.. as Jordy calls it “ice water”. Nic is convinced that there are health benefits to drinking ice cold water – probably a load of nonsense but he swears that it has health benefits.

All that aside, the other day I discovered that most home filtration systems remove all that is good about our precious water. I was shocked when someone told me that most filters remove all the calcium from water – the HORROR. This is why when Kuro-Bō approached me with some information on their product, I had to hop on board immediately to give it a try.

In the recent months, we have been very conscious about our environmental footprint. We recycle, I use reusable shopping bags and we try to repurpose all our store bought jars, boxes and containers.

Kuro-Bō is a product which consists of sticks of activated charcoal which you add to your water jugs / carafs and within 3 hours it removes all imperfections, giving you delicious, much softer tasting, beautiful drinking water. I find that tap water has the tendency, even after being filtered, to taste quite bitter but I oath that I taste a huge difference when using a Kuro-Bō stick in my water, the water seems more marshmallowy – that probably makes no sense but you have to try it to know what I mean.

Kuro-Bō is handcrafted, its sustainable and it’s an organic ancient Japanese process of cartridge free filtering that mineralises and purifies your water. Not only do the sticks cleanse your water but the product was made with our precious environment in mind.. something that I really love about the product. Kuro-Bō sticks are totally reusable, free of plastic AND even the packaging is biodegradable – WINNING in all areas if you ask me.

When Micah was a baby he really suffered with tummy cramps, we used a natural medication for him which contained a lot of charcoal in it. It was a pitch black liquid which absorbed all the impurities in his gut.. it honestly worked wonders for us. Charcoal has so many health benefits and can be used for so many things.

HOW TO USE:
Step 1: Boil your Kuro-Bō charcoal stick in a pot for 10 minutes to ‘activate’ it.
Step 2: Once your charcoal stick has cooled, fill a jug with up to 2L of water and drop your stick of charcoal in. You can just carry on refilling your jug to keep purifying water.
Step 3: After a month of daily use, boil your charcoal for 10 minutes to reactivate and use as before.
Step 4: After 3 months of use, repurpose your Kuro-Bō charcoal stick in one of many eco-friendly and innovative ways.

This might sound like a bit of admin in comparison to just filling your glass from the tap, but remember your body is so precious, it is definitely worth it.

Here are a few ideas on how you can repurpose your charcoal stick once you are done  purifying your water with it:

  • Dehumidify your bathroom
  • Use it as an organic air purifier
  • Keep it in your fridge or cupboards to keep them odour free
  • Break the stick up and put into your pet litter tray to remove odours
  • Add it to your aquarium to neutralise the pH of the water
  • Put it in your vegetable drawer to keep your veggies fresher for longer, or put into the fruit bowl to keep fruit from ripening too soon
  • Keep flowers fresher for longer
  • Break up your stick and bury it in your garden to balance the pH and remineralise your soil
  • Use it in your bath for some well-deserved pampering (the charcoal mineralise, removes impurities from the water, and stimulates blood flow)
  • Deflect/absorb electromagnetic and radio waves from computers, mobile phones and even microwaves in your home or at work
  • Use it as an unique and original décor piece.

ALL the possibilities. You can also order beautiful hand blown 100% recycled glass water carafe off the Kuro-Bō website here. At R215 (including VAT) per stick, lasting for three months each – these are the obvious choice and will undoubtedly provide much banter around the lunch table as friends and family want to find out more.
